Choices Children Make

This week Hug-A-Bug and I want to hash out Children Anger Management! When a child is playing with a toy and your child tries to take it away, what does your child do?

  1. Scream
  2. Hit or push the other child
  3. Tell a Parent/adult

If you chose any of the above, you’re probably feeling frustrated. You have explained over and over again that yelling, harming others or excessively “tattle telling” is not an appropriate response. But nothing seems to work! Check out these options that Hug-A-Bug and I use:

Dealing With Your Child’s Anger

  • Count and Breathe. Ask your child to stop and count to ten when they feel frustrated. If needed you can count with them. Usually by the time he gets to ten your child will have forgotten what he was upset about. At least it gives them a chance to think about other options.
  • Think about other choices. There are many ways to handle frustration. Could they tell the other in words why he is angry and work together to find a solution? walk away for now and come back later? Do a relaxation exercise such as taking 3 deep breaths?
  • Act out the best options.

Hug-A-Bug and I have used this in my classroom and with my own children while growing up. It’s a useful exercise to do together and encourages positive action through role modeling.

Give it a try for a month or two and let me know what works best for you!

Here is a chart that you can post on your wall or refrigerator.

 Are You Angry?

           Stop and count to ten

                   Think about your choices:

1.Tell in words why you are angry

  2.Walk away for now

          3.Do a relaxation exercise

         Act out your best choice!
